Superior General

The Superior General of the Congregation of the Passion (Passionists) is Father Joachim Xavier REGO.

No. 131 of our Constitutions describes it such:

The head of the entire Congregation is called the Superior General. He has ordinary and proper jurisdiction over all the Provinces, Vice-Provinces, Regional Vicariates, houses, members, and goods of the Congregation. This jurisdiction of his is to be exercised according to the norms of common and particular law. He is elected for six years and may be immediately re-elected only once.

Fr.Joachim was re-elected for a second term to this Office at the 47th General Chapter held in Rome on 17th October 2018. Together with a Council of six Passionists, his task is to govern the Congregation always remembering our mission in the Church: “to preach the Gospel of the Passion by our life and apostolate.” (Const.2) Today, the Passionists number just under 2000 religious men present in 62 countries.

Father Joachim belongs to the Holy Spirit Province (Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam) of the Congregation. He was professed as a Passionist religious in 1976 and ordained as a priest in 1981. His previous service in the Congregation (since ordination) has been as follows:

1982 – 1985 – St Joseph’s Retreat, Hobart (Tasmania)
1985 (Sept) – 1986 (March) – Cochin, India
1986 – 2004 – Papua New Guinea (Regional Vicar 8 years)
1992 – 1994 – Jayapura, Indonesia
2004 – 2007 – St Brigid’s Retreat, Marrickville (Sydney)
2007 – 2012 (Sept) – Provincial Superior

Father Joachim was born in Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Burma) on 16th August 1954 and migrated with his family to Australia in 1969.
