Reflection:
In this Gospel, Jesus says He came to bring fire to the earth. At first, these words may sound harsh or confusing. But the fire He speaks of is not meant to destroy – it is the fire of God’s love, a fire that purifies and brings new life. Jesus wants this fire to burn in every heart and renew the world.
He also says that His coming will bring division, not peace. This does not mean Jesus wants conflict, but that following Him often leads to difficult choices. When people respond differently to God’s truth, division can happen, even within families or close relationships.
The message of Jesus challenges us to live with honesty, justice, and faith, even when it is uncomfortable. His love pushes us to let go of what is selfish or false, so that something new can grow. The peace He brings is not the absence of struggle, but the deep peace that comes from living in truth.
This passage reminds us that being a follower of Christ means being willing to change, to let His fire burn away what holds us back, and to let His Spirit make us new. Let us ask our Lord Jesus Christ to help us welcome the fire of love and let it bring light and renewal to our lives.
