Daniel 7: 15-27

Reflection:
Today is the last day in our liturgical calendar. It is an opportunity to look back in order to look forward. It is also the last day in the week where we have been reading from Daniel and Luke who have both been very graphic in their descriptions of things to come – the destruction of the Temple (also another way that Jesus was foreshadowing his own death), the analogy of the budding trees for the coming of the kingdom but also the destruction of all that is around and the many visions of Daniel.
Daniel’s visions, particularly of the fourth beast with 10 horns, the trampling of those under its feet and the one horn that had eyes and a mouth that waged war on the saints, alarmed and upset him. In his wisdom, he sought out counsel and spiritual guidance. The truth spoken to Daniel was that evil, destruction and persecution were to come, especially to the saints of the Most High and slander of the Most High himself, God. But these things will be conquered as in the end ‘every empire will serve and obey’ God.
Jesus is clear in asking us each to keep watch, especially of our hearts (and not on the calamities raging around us). We have so much that can consume our time, talents and treasures, that take us away from building the kingdom of God and therefore away from building up our real purpose which is to love God with all our heart. Distractions, temptations and other ‘options’ will present themselves. We need to take note of them and make a conscience choice to either give in or make a new year’s resolution to stand strong and with confidence before the Son of Man.
So let us be vigilant and ‘stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen.’
