Reflection:

As the story goes a group of enthusiastic novices saw St Francis of Assisi sweeping the corridor in a large friary. Expecting some deep spiritual insight they asked him what he would do if he knew he was going to die before he finished the task. He looked at them and replied, ’I would go on sweeping the corridor’.

This could be our response too.

We don’t have to change into our best clothes or bake to perfect meal or spring clean the house because the Lord is coming to call you home. The Lord’s invitation to us is be ready. It is not a time for panic, anxiety, stress or changing our lifestyle or commitment. It is a time to go on doing what you normally do, sweep the floor (I would be careful about mowing the lawn; not recommended for people with heart conditions).

‘Come as you are, that’s how I want you’ are words from the Deidre Brown hymn. They are the perfect refrain for reflection as we move into the Advent season.
