Reflection:
Our readings between the Ascension and Pentecost present the dual picture of the fledgling Church and its activities in the Acts of the Apostles and the farewell remarks and blessings of Jesus in the Gospel. Today is no different.
Paul’s appeal to have his trial held in Rome seems political and perhaps wise, as it allowed him time to continue his work of spreading the Gospel message, often to the prisoners and guards who shared his life. In the long run it may not have been the best decision but either way, Paul lived out his call to preach the good news wherever he was. Our choices and decisions also allow us to be messengers of the good news no matter the results of the choices we make.
The Gospel presents the most beautiful image of Jesus and Peter by the lake of Galilee. Their intimate conversation reflects their relationship, as Peter assures Jesus of his love and as Jesus entrusts Peter with the mandate to feed his sheep, his lambs, his people. The concept of feeding goes beyond the physical provision of food, to the pastoral care, in all its aspects, that typifies the true Christian.
Today we hear Jesus asking us ‘Do you love me?’ and like Peter we may hear the response “Follow me”
