Reflection

In today’s gospel, Jesus once again prepares his disciples for what lies ahead—his suffering, his death, and the cost of following him. Yet woven into this difficult message is a profound teaching on humility. When the mother of James and John approaches Jesus, asking that her sons be given places of honour, we see a mother’s instinctive desire to secure a good future for her children. It’s a longing many of us understand deeply. But Jesus gently redirects her, reminding her that such decisions belong to the Father alone. His response is not a dismissal but an invitation: to let go of our need for control, to trust God’s wisdom, and to embrace a life of service rather than status.

As a mum of four, I know the ache of wanting my children to be cared for and supported. Recently, a teacher at my kids’ school asked specifically for my spirited son to be placed in his form class so he could look out for him and step in if needed. I was overwhelmed with gratitude. It reminded me that there are countless people quietly championing our young ones—serving not for recognition, but out of genuine care.

Today’s gospel invites us to pause and notice these humble servants in our own lives. The ones who “run interference,” who protect, guide, and support without fanfare. Perhaps today we might whisper a prayer of thanks for them, asking God to bless all who serve with such quiet, faithful love.
