Reflection
2nd Sunday of Lent, we are given the reading of the transfiguration, where the full divinity and glory of Jesus is unveiled for a few disciples.
It would have been a profound experience. He really was Emmanuel. God with us. Veiled in human flesh.
But what stands out to me most is how short the event seems to be. Jesus seems to ‘pack up’ the divine cosmic show rather quickly as they continue to make their way to Jerusalem, to the cross.
You might have heard of ‘mountain top experiences’, moments where we encounter the full amazing glory of God, and like Peter, we want to stay. We want to stay in the extraordinariness and escape our boring, pain-filled lives.
But to me, the story is revealing the hidden truth- the divine presence in the ordinary. That Jesus had always been divine, hidden in human flesh. Making the ordinary extraordinary!!
But what if this was the glimpse of the full gospel and the key to our relationship to God? To see the Glory in all that is hidden and unveiled.
To find mountain top experiences in our kitchens.
To see the glory in a leaf or even the glory in the bad.
A favourite poem of mine, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, has the line:Â
The earth’s crammed with heaven.Â
Every common bush afire with God.Â
But only he who sees takes off his shoesÂ
How can you see God in all the unordinary places this lent? How can you learn to see Christ in a leaf?Â
