Reflection

Today marks the start of a new year in the secular calendar. While much of the world is already packing away Christmas decorations, the Church continues to celebrate the joy of the Christmas season. On this feast of Mary, the Gospel presents the shepherds’ journey to Bethlehem, where they find the Child Jesus lying in a manger.

How did the shepherds find the Christ child? They didn’t have modern tools like GPS to guide them, but they were led by the brilliance of a star. After worshipping the Child, they shared the incredible news of His birth. Those who heard it didn’t doubt but instead marvelled and rejoiced.

A profound line in this Gospel says, “Mary kept all these things in her heart and pondered them.” What do you hold in your heart and reflect upon? Perhaps it’s a joyful memory or a difficult challenge. In our fast-paced world, taking time to pause and reflect isn’t always easy. When we face pain or loss, the idea of pondering may feel overwhelming. Yet, God invites us to reflect on our lives—our joys, gifts, and even our sorrows.

Mary’s life encompassed the full spectrum of human emotions, from immense joy to deep sorrow. Today, we can turn to Mary, asking her to walk with us—not just on this day but every day. Her steadfast presence, shaped by her own joys and struggles, offers us strength and the peace we long for.
