Readings:
Malachi 3:1-4,23-24
Luke 1: 57-66
Reflection:
We know that Luke is one of the Synoptic Gospels due to its many similarities with the accounts of Mark and Matthew. However, in today’s Gospel narrative, Luke presents a unique story that only he includes: the account of John’s birth. Luke features these nativity stories, emphasising that Jesus is superior to John in every respect. As we approach Christmas Eve 2024, it is fascinating to reflect on the people surrounding John’s birth. When Elizabeth’s neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had lavished His faithful love upon her, they rejoiced with her. They genuinely celebrated the goodness of God at work in the lives of Elizabeth and Zechariah. Unfortunately, this kind of support is not always present in real-life situations.
Have you experienced asking yourselves, “Why me?” when tough times hit? And when we see others prosper, we might wonder, “Why them ?”Recognising the blessings of others can often draw our attention, particularly if we struggle with a competitive mindset or unresolved insecurities. However, ultimately, it’s unlikely that we will find true happiness unless we learn to take joy in the success of others.
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, may Jesus inspire us to transform our hearts from fleeting sentiments to a spirit of mercy and gratitude, allowing us to rejoice in the abundant grace He reveals in countless ways. Merry Christmas!
