Death of John the Baptist

Readings:

1 Corinthians 1:1-9
Mark 6:17-29

Reflection:

Today, we commemorate the death of John the Baptist. He was the last prophet before Jesus and the first martyr for Jesus. His life and death foreshadowed Jesus’ ministry.

Despite John chastising Herod for marrying Herodias, Herod was fascinated by him. Herodias, on the other hand, loathed John because of what he said and wanted him dead. In the end, despite his good intentions to protect John, Herod was weak. His bravado to give his step-daughter whatever she desired in front of his many distinguished guests was reckless. When faced with the choice of denying her the request for the head of John on a dish, he capitulated.

John’s reputation for speaking the truth, for his call to repentance and his austere lifestyle were his hallmark characteristics which ultimately cost him his life.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. The Truth draws people to itself, yet it causes others to turn away. When faced with the Truth, which way do I turn – towards it or away from it?

The spiritual battle between good and evil still endures. People continue to be persecuted, and many are martyred for their faith. Other injustices such as wrongful imprisonment, child poverty and abuse are some of the evils in our society. There are many who work to fight against these injustices.

John paid the ultimate price for his faith in Jesus as he knew that he was the Truth. How do I proclaim and fight for the Truth?
