Readings:
Ezekiel 37: 1-14
Matthew 22: 34-40
Reflection:
The first reading for today dates to the time when Israel was exiled to Babylon. During their captivity, they seemed to have lost their identity and the temple, which they considered dearly as the dwelling of God’s divine presence, had been destroyed. This is the reason behind the lament of the Israelites, as they cried: “Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.” In their moment of hopelessness, a prophetic response of deliverance comes. Unlike the other prophets who were sent to preach repentance and obedience, Ezekiel brings a message of hope, the promise that God’s spirit will bring them back from exile.
Isn’t this our longing and prayers for what we have read and heard from the numerous conflicts experienced in war-torn regions around the world, which caused significant suffering and loss for innocent, defenceless, and vulnerable civilians caught in these situations?
Despite the seeming hopelessness and the repetition of history, it is essential to remember that God intervenes in His own time. Perhaps, rather than seeking a new prophet, we can find our guidance in the Gospel’s reminder to prioritise love – love for God and for our neighbours. Even in the face of struggle, hardship, and confusion, the commandment to love serves as a beacon of hope, urging us to settle our hearts and trust in the enduring love that God has for each and every one of us.
