Reflection:
It was a cold winters day when Jesus sought shelter in the portico of Solomon on the east side of the temple. There were other people in the portico also seeking shelter. It was the feast of the (re) dedication of the temple and so the presence of the various Jewish groups would be expected. As Jesus walked amongst the people the one question they wanted to ask is ‘Are you the Christ? Tell us plainly yes or no’. There were people who genuinely wanted to know and waited expectantly for his answer. Others, especially the Jewish leaders, were looking for a way to trap Jesus. His words may lead to blasphemy or treason and death.
Jesus’ answer was simple – my words and deed speak for themselves. They tell you who I am and what is my relationship with the father.  You decide the answer to your question.
To follow Jesus is a decision we are called to make through our lives. Everyday brings forth situations of belief or unbelief. Being a follower of Jesus can make us uncomfortable, uncertain, confused, or even to be seen as a fool. We can be ridiculed as Jesus was ridiculed, as Jesus was spat upon so are we, as Jesus was threatened by violence and hatred so are we. When these things happen, our commitment stands firm. We are the sheep who follow our shepherd Jesus. He leads us over rocky ground, snow covered fields and finds us shelter in God’s home.
God is love. Our life commitment to God in faith is not an emotion, a feel-good experience to be put aside when life gets difficult. The love Jesus speaks about to a love that has no beginning or end it is eternal. It is the union of the Creator and the created. ‘Do you love me?’ Jesus asks. ‘Yes, Lord you know I love you……’ This is the last dialogue Jesus has with Peter after the resurrection. It is the same ongoing dialogue Jesus has with us. Do you love me, as I love the father for the father and I are one?                     Â
What is your answer?
