Paul of the Cross’ vision was so clear that he wrote a Rule of life for Passionists before he even had a community to live it! He has been described by some writers as “the greatest missionary of his time” and by others as “the greatest contemplative”. It was the blending of these aspects of Christian tradition together with a heart focused spirituality that made his rule of life unique.
Paul saw that the primary ministry of Passionists is to create an environment or opportunity that allows others to experience God’s personal love, which must first be the focus of their own prayer. He directed his followers “not to preach in a lofty manner that the people cannot understand”.
This resulted in Passionists being down to earth and practical in their instruction and apostolic preaching.
