REMEMBERING THE PAST, RECORDING THE PRESENT,
TO GROW IN THE FUTURE

THE PASSIONISTS IN AUSTRALIA

The Passionists are a Religious Congregation founded in Italy in 1721 by St. Paul of the Cross.

THE ITALIAN PASSIONISTS

The Passionist Congregation has been working in Australia since 1843 when four Passionists from the Italian Province came to Australia to commence a Mission for the Australian Aboriginies on Stradbroke Island.  Ultimately their Mission was to fail because of poor supply, but their work is well recognised, written about and often quoted. They continued working in Adelaide when stranded on their way to another Aboriginal mission in Western Australia and got no further. Two of these pioneer are buried in Australia.  Their story tells of the many hardships they faced and their dedication in doing so.

THE ANGLO-HIBERNIAN PASSIONISTS

Passionists from the English and Irish Province arrived in Australia in 1886 and commenced their work at Marrickville, N.S.W.    The Priests and Brothers from the Anglo-Hibernian Province have now spread to all States of Australia, Papua New Guinea and also work in New Zealand.  Recently they have been joined by the Passionist Sisters from the Philippines, India and Indonesia who assist in Nursing Homes and Parish Ministries.

THE CONTENTS OF OUR ARCHIVES

It is important to have our many records and artifacts stored in a safe condition.

While we have a lot to do to bring it up to full potential it is well on the way and at long last we have a permanent home, set in the new Provincial Office at Marrickville, N.S.W.

The records we hold reflect the lives and service of all the Passionists who have lived and work in our Province.

We have records on all the houses and retreats we have worked from and owned.

We have copies of books and periodicals written by Passionists, together with audio and video tapes, certificates and artifacts.

Our customs and traditions are also recorded, as also the lives of our Passionist saints and our special devotions.

A visit to the Passionist Province Archives can be arranged by appointment with the Archivist.
